Post: How to avoid Impulse Buys

Thank author of this post/commentAs mentioned before, I contribute some to the website Cash Commons which is one of the biggest FAQ?s on finances on the web.  Recently a question was asked that applies to every single American today, how to avoid impulse buys.  The biggest threat today to keeping a budget and staying out of debt is the impulse buy.  Whether it is something big like buying a new car, to spending $50 a week at Target, or just eating out every night because you do not feel like cooking, we all need to guard against the dreaded impulse buy.  The Frugal Lawyer had a great answer to the question that pretty much sums it up but I would like to add a few thoughts.

Know your budget-The great thing about having a budget is that you know at the beginning of the month if you have the money ahead of time to purchase what you want.  If you find out that a certain TV you were wanting is on sale or that outfit is on clearance you can buy it and not feel guilty about it if it is in your budget.
Avoid window shopping-Yes, some of us can do this and not be tempted but most of us can not.  Simply put, if your budget is maxed out in a certain category then you probably should not be ?just looking?.  Once you get in a store or start looking online there is a good chance youll get caught up in the moment and make an impulse purchase.
Say no to yourself-This is the most important one.  All of us have this inner child that constantly tells us ?I want it and I want it NOW!?  They key is to be able to be mature enough to wait and have a long term perspective instead of just living in the moment.

Thank author of this post/comment"Being An Impulse Buyer "

Oh my, thanks for sharing those information in here. I must say that I have been an impulse buyer and I would like to change my ways, for good. It would never be that easy. Letting go of an old habit. But if it is for the good then I am willing to change and make sacrifices. I am sure that I can manage to cope up soon.

Good day.

Thank author of this post/comment"Leaving The Shopping Habit? "

It is not easy to get out of the habit you are used to. There are some who suffers from withdrawal syndrome. Shopping, lots of people are into shopping. Not knowing that they are spending too much than they can afford. But how do we effectively withdraw from over spending and shopping too much?

Good thing that there are some good frugal ideas that we can consult and be able to get help as well.

I think one big way to avoid impulse buying is to pay for everything with cash, as opposed to a credit card or cheques. Something about actually handing over that green stuff will make you think twice. Only use your card for bigger purchases, or online purchases, and only leave the house with a certain amount of cash on you so that you cannot be tempted to spend more than you should.

I may say that at times I am also an impulse buyer. I just can't stop myself to buy something I really want once I get to that particular mall. But thanks for the post, I learned some few things how to avoid impulse buys. It's really important to know my budget and I think I need to avoid window shopping because it really starts there. Great day everyone.
